Denmark Aims for "Digital First"
02 Jan 2024

Denmark is one of the leading countries in Europe in the utility of digital health as an integral part of healthcare delivery.

December 2023, an agreement was established to invest 500 Million DKK in the following areas:

  • Home monitoring,
  • Digital psychiatry services
  • Digital rehabilitation
  • Digital contacts for those who can and want to - a “digital first” principle
  • Digital foundation for home treatment and coordination of care.

The aim is to actively utilise digital or technical solutions where it makes sense for the healthcare system and is economically justifiable.

The aim is to accomplish the following objectives by 2028:

  • citizens with COPD, diabetes and heart failure will reduce the number of physical check-ups by 50% at hospitals by switching to continuous digital monitoring at home and virtual contacts.
  • The number of digital programmes for people with mental distress will be doubled.
  • Citizens in all municipalities will be offered digital rehabilitation programmes per section 140 of the Danish Health Act.
  • Citizens in all municipalities will be offered virtual visits in healthcare.
  • Video consultations continue to spread in general practice, and the share of total consultations increases year by year during the period.
