The Institute for the Hospital Remuneration System has published the list of technologies receiving innovation funding in the year 2017 in Germany

The Institute for the Hospital Remuneration System (InEK), being responsible for the development of the G-DRG system, finished the evaluation of the requests for innovation funding (NUB), which were sent in until 31st October 2016. Out of the 686 unique from a total of 36,675 requests, 154 (22%) received the positive status 1, 67 (10%) of them were methods based on medical devices, which allows the requesting hospitals to negotiate with the sickness funds over innovation funding.
Out of the 686 unique from a total of 36,675 requests, 154 (22%) received the positive status 1, 67 (10%) of them were methods based on medical devices, which allows the requesting hospitals to negotiate with the sickness funds over innovation funding. Among the 67 methods, a median of 15 hospitals applied for innovation funding per technology, in a range from 1 to 411. A histogram visualizing the distribution can be found in figure 1.

Categorized into technology-related groups, it can be observed that cardiovascular technologies are by far the most commonly funded technologies (Figure 2).

With the introduction of § 137h SGB V in 2016, hospitals are now obliged to hand in an extensive scientific dossier to the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) at the same time when applying for NUB for the first time for methods based on high-risk medical devices. For that reason, InEK introduced a new column indicating their evaluation whether such an application was necessary (Figure 3). With grouping a method in categories A (no first-time request) or D (no method based on a high-risk medical device), InEK states that a method is not relevant to a § 137h assessment, while categories B (InEK unable to assess whether it is a first-time request) and C (insufficient submitted information to assess the question) indicate that InEK could not evaluate whether a § 137h application was necessary. This applies to the 3 methods with status 1 in category B: “External stabilization framework for anastomosis of an AV shunt in the context of shunt surgery”, “Epiretinal retinal prosthesis with event-based camera”, and “Epiretinal retinal prosthesis or epiretinal retinal prosthesis with event-based camera”.
